What I didn't realize and learn until Earl and I spoke at a later time is that Earl completely wrote me off after that incident in the preseason. He did not speak to me for the first three to four months of my time at the organization. All because of that joke in that moment at that time. Since then, we've developed a very good relationship and because of that incident, I believe our relationship is much stronger.

This situation makes you think about how one moment or one impression can change someone’s perspective on you and cause them to write you off completely. They might not know you; they might not understand who you are or what you stand for, but they’ve written you off over one moment in time.

Earl did start talking to me after this event, but it took a long time. This just goes to show you, you can’t make someone change their mind about you, only they can do that for themselves.
